Systemetric’s robot for the FIRST 2002 competition game ‘Zone Zeal’. The idea of the competition was to earn points by getting balls into goals and ending the game in your teams area to score extra points.
Our robot for the FIRST 2003 competition game ‘Stack Attack’. The robot was one of the few robots designed to stack the boxes. It did this by picking up one box then putting it on top of another box, then took the bottom box and placed this on top of another box, with the other boxes balanced on top of this. It kept repeating this manoeuvre to create stacks of boxes. In trails, a stack of 11 was made before running out of space, so a larger stack could have been made given enough boxes and space.
This robot entered in the FIRST 2004 competition game ‘FIRST Frenzy: Raising the bar’. It reached New York overweight so it had to be modified before it could compete. Despite this, the team still went on to win the New York City Regionals.
This was the robot entered into the FIRST 2005 competition game ‘Triple Play’. This was the first competition where there were three teams to an alliance. The robot managed to get to the quarter final, taking the match into a fourth roundm and then a tie on the tie breaker.
Eric was named for the Latin word “Ericius”, which means hedgehog, as a tip of the hat to the 2003’s competition robot Stealth Hedgehog and the team logo. The team mascot, a toy hedgehog, is called Eric because of this.
Conicio (roughly pronounced Kon-e-key-oh) is named from the latin word meaning thrower. This robot was the teams entry into the FIRST 2006 competition game ‘Aim High’.
Despite finishing 14th after the first day, Conicio won all but one of its qualifiers on the second day, to earn a ranking of 7th. The team became the Alliance Captains of the of the 5th Alliance, and subsiquently took Conicio into the Final. The robot and the team came away with the Runners-Up trophy.
Mothzilla was the teams entry into the FIRST 2007 competiton game ‘Rack 'n' Roll’. The robot had an autonomous mode which was able to use a vision system to seek other robots. It was named Mothzilla due to its light seeking nature and the jaw like operation of the grabber on its arm.
This robot was entered into the FIRST 2008 competition game ‘FIRST Overdrive’. The robot employeed a pneumatic system to grab a 40" ball from a height and move it around. As the robot's arms hugged onto the ball, it was dubbed Hugzilla following the name of the previous years robot and setting the trend for future 'arm' robots.
Nessie was the teams entry into the FIRST 2009 compeition game ‘Lunacy’. The robot was designed to pickup balls from the ground and drop them into trailers carried by other teams robots. It participated in a low friction arena, and as such it was our first robot to use a swerve drive system to allow the operator to keep control of the robot where other robots would otherwise be sliding around the arena.
We are currently in the process of building our robot for the 2010 FIRST competition. More information will be posted closer to the competition.
